Dublin and Belfast were the locations for the 2017 World Cup, but Ireland could not repeat their feat of three years earlier.
The Irish were knocked out in the pool stages after a humbling defeat to France and eventually finished a disappointing eighth.
Japan were back at the World Cup for the first time in 15 years and though the USA made the semi-finals this time, the final was once again an England v New Zealand affair with the game being played at the Kingspan Stadium in front of over 17,000 fans.
It was a terrific final which saw a hat-trick from prop Toka Natua as the Black Ferns secured an impressive fifth title.
