'Pioneers: The First Women's Rugby World Cup' mini exhibition has launched at the World Rugby Museum at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
In April 1991, the first women's Rugby World Cup tournament was held in Cardiff. Behind the scenes, a handful of dedicated volunteers had worked tirelessly to bring the tournament to fruition on a shoestring budget, but who were they and what did it take to organise a World Cup from scratch?
The new mini exhibition at the World Rugby Museum explores the challenges faced by four women from Richmond FC who, supported by a wider team of volunteers, organised a World Cup tournament in little more than 12 months. They met before and after work, giving up several hours each day on top of their full-time employment. With no endorsement from the IRB and no sponsors to provide funding, the success of the tournament was testament to their determination and pioneering spirit.
Entry to 'Pioneers: The First Women's Rugby World Cup' is included with World Rugby Museum and Allianz Stadium Tour tickets.
