Rugby Strips and Textiles

Purpose of the workshop

This workshop aims to support hands-on learning and creative thinking by looking at the evolution of rugby apparel from the 1840s to the present. Themes covered will include: an introduction to textiles and fabrics used, the impact of a changing culture on the sport, and the lifestyle of Victorian schoolchildren. All your students need is some enthusiasm and their creative minds.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of the history and evolution of Rugby football.
  • Reflect on how craftwork, design and materials used in rugby apparatus have changed in the last 200 years and why.
  • Examine how societal changes have impacted the sport and the players.

Activities

  • Practical classroom session led by Museum educator.
  • Self-directed tour of the World Rugby Museum galleries.
  • Behind-the-scenes guided tour of Twickenham Stadium.
